Canada - Superbugs on the rise

We have received report that a study published in the American Journal of Infection Control has found that rates of hospital-acquired infections soared in Canada between 1999 and 2005.

Rates of MRSA more than doubled in the period from 1999 to 2005, there was an upward trend in C. difficile infections and the number of hospitals reporting new cases of infection with VRE soared.

The director of infectious disease prevention and control with Ontario's public health agency said of VRE:

"This organism is highly resistant. It's resistant to almost all the antibiotics that we use. We do a good job of cleaning the room but if we miss part of the bedside table, a month later someone touches it, they can get it. It's a very, very pervasive problem."
